Altantis Productions’ Hairspray opens November 14

Ever since I was young, I’ve been really interested in theater especially in musical plays. Recently, I’ve seen STAGES’ production of West Side Story starring Joanna Ampil and Christian Bautista. Although tickets to musical plays are a bit expensive, I make it sure to save up and watch. I’m really excited to watch Atlantis Productions’ Hairspray at the Star Theater, CCP Complex that will run from November 14, 2008 to December 7, 2008. I’ll be watching the November 23rd matinee show together with my friends. Madel Ching and Tim Espinosa would lead the cast playing Tracy Turnblad and Link Larkin, respectively. Madel Ching came from the Ateneo Blue Repertory. She also started in Ateneo Blue Repertory’s production of High School Musical. On the other hand, Tim Espinosa is part of ABS-CBN’s Star Magic Batch 15. Aside from theater newbies, Atlantis Productions’ Hairspray will also star theater veterans Michael de Mesa, Leo Rialp, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Noel Rayos, Enchang Kaimo and Dulce.

HAIRSPRAY is directed by Bobby Garcia, Choreography by Cecille Martinez, Musical Direction by Archie Castillo, Production Design by Gino Gonzales, Lighting Design by Shoko Matsumoto and Specialty wigs by The Broadway Wig Co.

Hairspray runs from November 14 to December 7, 2008 at the Star Theatre, CCP Complex. For tickets call Atlantis Productions at 892-7078, 840-1187 or Ticketworld at 891-9999. Tickets are priced at P1,200, P1,000, P800, and P600. Ticket Prices are subject to surcharges.

Joanna Ampil, Karylle and Christian Bautista on West Side Story

West Side Story is known to be one of the best musicals of all time with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, this exciting production will be headed by Christian Bautista who will be playing the role of Tony and Joanna Ampil of Ms. Saigon fame as Maria (alternating with GMA7 actress TV host Karylle). No one can ensure anyone that Joanna Ampil will perform as Maria on certain dates or vice versa.

This is STAGES’ third major production after Footloose (2005) and High School Musical On Stage (2007). The play is an intense, dramatic dance musical with many show-stopping numbers and immortal songs like “Somewhere,” “Tonight,” “One Hand One Heart,” “America,” and “Something’s Coming.”

Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo will direct the 2008 STAGES production and the Musical Director is Gerard Salonga (brother of Lea Salonga) so it’s sure to be an awesome show.
